Maryam Safdar, better known by the name Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is a Pakistani politician who is the daughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and the First Lady of Pakistan Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif.
Originally involved in the family's charity organizations, Ms. Nawaz played a prominent role in managing her father's successful re-election campaign in 2013.She now works for his party, the right-wing Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)."She is always the focus of attention," says BBC Urdu's Asif Farooqi, who has met her several times. "She has clearly emerged as someone powerful, if not a designated political heir to her father."
She received her early education from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Lahore. She then enrolled in King Edward Medical University in the late 1980s, however, she left the college without completing her degree. A controversy arose in the matter later on when an opposition leader alleged that admission was illegal. Reportedly, she completed undergraduate studies from the University of Punjab, from where she received a master's degree. In 2012, it was reported that she is completing her Ph.D. degree on post-9/11 radicalization in Pakistan. In 2014, her degrees in M.A. (English Literature) and Ph.D. in Political Science were questioned by Lahore High Court. It was unclear whether her Ph.D. degree was earned or honorary. In 1992, she married Muhammad Safdar Awan.
